A Novel About Journalists
London, Chapman & Hall, 1938.
First edition, first impression. 8vo. Original patterned cloth. First issue dust-jacket, correctly priced 7/6 to inside front flap.
The first edition, first issue of Waugh’s famous novel, in which the protagonist, William Boot, is loosely based on the journalist Bill Deedes, with whom Waugh had worked alongside in Abyssinia. The first issue jacket carries the masthead ‘[D]aily Beas[t]’, which is generally believed to have been dropped due for the second issue to threatened legal action by Lord Beaverbrook due to its obvious similarity to that of the Daily Express, which he owned.
