Dickens’s third novel follows the fortunes of young Nicholas Nickleby, thrown on his own resources with his mother and sister after his father’s death, his path taking in the brutal Yorkshire boarding school Dotheboys Hall under the tyrannical Wackford Squeers, an itinerant theatrical troupe, and the machinations of his miserly uncle Ralph.
