Weird and supernatural tales by Richard Marsh, author of The Beetle (1897), the novel that at first outsold Dracula. They include “A Psychological Experiment”, “The Photographs”, with its ghostly prison portraits, and “The Houseboat”, in which a holidaying couple witness the re-enactment of a murder. “Marsh” was the pseudonym of Richard Heldmann (1857–1915), a convicted forger turned prolific author and grandfather of Robert Aickman.
