McKenna (1888–1967) was a prolific chronicler of English upper-class society whose 1917 novel Sonia: Between Two Worlds was a major bestseller (the tenth-best-selling novel in the US in 1918, filmed in 1921, and running through numerous UK printings). Breasted Amazon is one of several later McKenna novels centring on a highly cultured artist-protagonist with feet of clay, a recurring preoccupation of his 1930s work.
