A collection of two short narratives by Edward Tracy Turnerelli (1813–1896), set against the backdrop of Russian aristocratic society. The first traces the violent downfall of a Russian noblewoman, whilst the second is a ghost story reprinted from his earlier Christmas Tales for Christmas Charities (1873), offering atmospheric supernatural fare typical of the period. Turnerelli brought rare firsthand authority to his Russian subject matter, having spent 18 years in Russia under the personal patronage of Tsar Nicholas I, earning the honorary title of “Delineator of the Ancient Monuments of Russia.” In genre terms, the work occupies an oft overlooked place in Victorian supernatural fiction, combining memoir, social history and sensational fiction.
