244 pages. + 3 pages of ads. light blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine which is a little faded, lettering to front cover in gilt within an ornate gilt panel, top/lower edges of spine a little creased, slight fading at top edge of spine, fading and discolouration to edges of lower cover, front endpaper not called for, prelims tanned, text clean and firm, else very good copy in attractive pictorial d/w which is missing sections from top/lower spine, there is also some loss along edges of panels, together with a few creases and general age darkening.

The first edition in English of Verne's sci-fi classic of a comet's collision with the earth which bears away part of the planet, and its inhabitants. This translation alters the text considerably with additions and emendations, paraphrases dialogue, and rearranges material, although the general thread of the story is followed. The translation was made from the serial version of the novel, published January to December 1877.
