The autobiography of Hans Habe (1911–77), born János Békessy in Budapest, tracing his career from Central European journalism through his escape from Nazism, service in the French Foreign Legion at the outbreak of war, flight to the United States and naturalisation in 1941, and his subsequent return to Germany with the American occupying forces in 1945, where he founded eighteen newspapers in the US zone, including the influential Die Neue Zeitung. Habe wrote under numerous further pseudonyms over his career and became a prolific novelist in German, several of his later thrillers and historical novels appearing in English translation; this autobiography was first published in German in 1954 as Ich stelle mich: Meine Lebensgeschichte.
