A Review of Contemporary African Arts
Ibadan, Nigeria, New Culture Studios, 1978-79.

11 issues (complete). 4to. Original pictorial wrappers.

A very rare complete set of 11 issues of New Culture magazine, a publication that documented contemporary African art and culture, edited by the artist, sculptor and architect Demas Nwoko who received the 2023 Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement at the Venice Biennale. New Culture was published by his New Culture Studios in Ibadan, Nigeria and lasted only for just over a year between 1978-1979 before going out of print. Based on online research, only a few institutions around the world have copies of the magazines, and even fewer have complete sets

All 11 issues of New Culture magazine that make up the total published set are in very good-fine condition with no notable flaws. They also include all the original paper inserts and all the ‘dark pages’ (the sealed pages in each magazine that the reader is invited to cut open for a surprise), which are intact and unopened. It’s a wonderful collection rarely seen, let alone as a complete set.
